Saskatchewan Companies and Economy

When people think of Saskatchewan they usually think of farmland, and this is pretty accurate since most of Saskacthewans economy comes from farming along with a few other things. A large majority of our economy is based around our natural environment, this includes mostly grains, livestock, oil and gas, potash, uranium, wood, and fuel. About 64.9 million acres or 40% of land in Saskatchewan is farmland, which is enough to account for 20% of Canada’s agricultural resources. Saskatchewan has about 1.13 million people, in which roughly 94% are working individuals. Mining is also a major industry in Saskatchewan as we amount to 30% of the worlds uranium reserves. Oil and gas are also large industries here, however not nearly as large as agriculture and mining.

One large company in Saskatchewan is Cameco Corporation. They are a mining and energy industry that was founded in 1988. They are among the worlds largest uranium providers and they supply 18% of the worlds uranium from Canada, the US and Kazakhstan. They are also the leading provider for nuclear fuel processing services. They hold about 410 million lbs of reserves and 1.6 million hectares across 3 different continents. Their vision is to “energize the world as the global leader of fuel supply for clean-air nuclear power” and to “bring the multiple benefits of nuclear energy to the world”. As of 2013 they had 3300 employees and their revenue was $2.483 billion. Their biggest pride is in their sustainability program. It focuses in their work safety procedures in order to keep everybody healthy even when working around uranium around the clock.

Recently at my school, Campbell Collegiate, the CEO and founder of AGT Foods, Murad Al-Katib, came and did a presentation for our business program. He is an extremely successful businessman, when he was younger he convinced a family in Turkey to fund him $1,000,000 and he used this to start his first company. His current company, AGT foods, is a pulse based company that was founded in 2007. They purchase lentils, peas, beans and chickpeas from farmers and ship them to over 120 countries around the world. They currently have 41 facilities across 5 continents. AGT’s revenue is approximately $2 billion as of 2016. Murad Al-Katib was awarded Entrepreneur of the year for the prairies by Ernest & Young.
